The future of AI education in radiology is being reshaped by the Artificial Intelligence (AI) Literacy Course, directed by Jordan D. Perchik, MD. The Society for Advanced Body Imaging (SABI) is proud to partner with Artificial Intelligence in Radiology Education (AIRE) to offer this year’s free one-week course covering lectures on fundamental terms and applications of AI in radiology. Dr. Perchik identified a critical need for AI education within the radiology curriculum and by leveraging remote learning, the AI Literacy Course has successfully reached hundreds of radiology trainees worldwide since AIRE’s founding in 2020, enabling unprecedented access to AI education within the radiology community.

By providing interactive learning experiences, this program aims to empower radiologists to embrace AI technology and improve patient care outcomes. Upon completion of previous AIRE courses, participants reported a significant increase in their knowledge of fundamental AI terms and methods, with an impressive 93% attesting to the course's ability to enhance their understanding of AI.

AI has the potential to enhance the efficiency and accuracy of radiology practice, but in order to fully realize its benefits, radiologists need to be properly educated on how to use this technology effectively,” says Dr. Perchik. “In developing AIRE, we hope to equip radiologists with the knowledge and skills they need to excel in the era of AI-driven healthcare.”

The program's main goal is to foster a deep understanding of AI technology among radiologists, empowering them to understand and apply these advancements to advance patient care outcomes pertinent to their practice. With a rotating two-year curriculum, all major subspecialty areas in radiology are covered. The 2024 course topics include Pediatric, Musculoskeletal, and Cardiac Radiology AI along with Quality Assurance and Ethical Considerations.

SABI President Dr. Ivan Pedrosa emphasizes the importance of proper education in maximizing the potential of AI in radiology practice

Dr. Perchik has done an amazing job initiating and consolidating this AI course as an outstanding educational resource for radiologists at any stage of their career who wish to learn about AI. The partnership between SABI and AIRE aligns perfectly with SABI’s mission of innovation and translation of cutting-edge technology into the practice of body imaging”.

Scheduled to begin on September 30, this year's AI Literacy Course will culminate in a hybrid virtual and live hands-on session at the SABI Annual Meeting on October 5 in Washington, DC. This unique opportunity will enable participants to interact with innovative AI products, further enhancing their proficiency in leveraging AI technology in their practice. SABI takes pride in its partnership with AIRE to expand to an even larger audience this open-access educational resource for radiology professionals worldwide.

SABI is thrilled to announce the launch of its new Learning Management System  (LMS), providing an innovative platform for members and non-members to access the 2023 SABI Conference plenary sessions. This initiative aims to enhance the learning experience in the field of advanced body imaging and empower professionals to stay at the forefront of their field.

Available now, the SABI Learning Management System offers a host of features designed to enhance the educational opportunities available to radiologists outside of conference season. One of the key highlights is the exclusive digital access to the 2023 SABI Conference plenary sessions. Members and non-members alike will have the unique opportunity to virtually attend these sessions, gaining valuable insights from leading experts in the field of advanced body imaging.

This feature ensures that medical professionals can conveniently enhance their knowledge and expertise while meeting their accreditation requirements. It is important to note that if you attended the 2023 SABI Conference, you already have access to the 2023 Plenary recordings in the conference app, previously distributed. This new LMS allows those who didn't get a chance to attend the 2023 SABI conference to watch the plenary sessions and obtain the corresponding CME credits.

"We are delighted to introduce the SABI Learning Management System, which will offer digital and year-round access to the content of the SABI Annual Conference and beyond. By offering this access and providing CME credit opportunities, we are committed to fostering continuous learning and professional development in our field. This is a great option for anyone who wasn’t able to attend last year’s event in person."

Dr. Ivan Pedrosa, President of SABI

Your program committee is ramping up preparations for the 2024 SABI Annual meeting, scheduled for October 5-9, 2024 at the Mayflower Hotel in Washington, DC. Mark your calendars today!

We invite you to submit ideas for talks for the annual meeting by February 7 using this submission portal. In addition to traditional body imaging interpretation and disease management, you will find options for speaking on artificial intelligence, and non-interpretive topics such as leadership and mentorship, quality and safety, radiology reporting, health equity, and DEI.

Also, along with the US, CT, and MR Innovations sessions, we welcome submissions on Molecular and Hybrid Imaging. This year, we are bringing back a variant of “Don’t let this happen to you” by putting a new spin on it- “Don’t let this happen to THEM” where we would like for you to submit your idea for a 5-minute presentation that depicts how imaging redirected clinical care from going down the wrong path.

We also are planning a rapid-fire session on workplace hacks where, in a 5-minute presentation, you share with your SABI colleagues something you do or have access to at work that makes your job more efficient, meaningful, or just plain better. Meeting highlights separate from plenary talks and workshops will include a special ½ day session on Sustainability in Radiology or Image Optimization Update, an AI Rodeo, our cutting edge “Vanguards of Research” session and our Ted Like talks.

To continue and further enhance the SABI tradition of dynamic, highly interactive, and engaging annual meetings, we will again emphasize panel discussions and debates. We will also explore using a ‘longitudinal” mentoring of plenary talks given by some of the society’s rising stars, more on that later in a separate request towards the spring.

Per our mission, we remain committed to developing young faculty. We are asking that senior SABI members and fellows encourage their younger colleagues to join you in a collaborative workshop or roundtable, or to submit their ideas for the meeting (will require them to join if they are not already members and are asked to present).

Best wishes for a happy and healthy 2024!

On behalf of the Program Committee,

    Desiree E. Morgan, MD

    President-elect SABI
